Smiley Faces Oral Health Project began originally as an Americorps VISTA project in 2003. The basic purpose of this project is to reduce the incidence of oral health disease. Smiley Faces educates the children regarding the importance of good oral health habits through dental screenings, videos and books, fun educational dental presentations, bulletin boards, and brushing and flossing demonstrations during the SAGMO sealant clinics. Children receive free fun dental supplies to make them want to take care of their teeth. On average, Smiley Faces distributes about 3,000 dental packs per year to Washington County children. Education for the community is given during community events, such as, the county fair, health fairs, etc. Smiley Faces has also created a dental resource guide to help county residents find a dental provider in instances where they cannot locate one. In most instances residents in Washington County have difficulty finding a dental provider who will accept Medicaid, or deliver services on a sliding scale for low income individuals. Residents needing assistance locating a provider can call Annette Portell, Oral Health Coordinator; or Diane Sexton, Oral Health VISTA at (573)438-8555.
